Year 9 English
The Junior English Programme is taught thematically. The aim of the course at Year 9 is to provide experience of a range of text types and introduce analytical skills that will be essential throughout your school career. You will study poetry, short stories, novels, films, and plays. Combined with this you will produce creative writing, formal writing, essays, and speeches.

Year 9 English - Introducing ShakespeareAn introduction to arguably the world's most important writer of all time. You will try to put yourself in Elizabethan times and visit The Globe Theatre to watch a famous Shakespeare play. Then, we will view a range of plays in the form of the Animated Shakespeare series and write a variety of written pieces connected to the Bard's works.

Year 9 English - Friends and WhanauFriends and Family are possibly the most influential people in our lives, and help us to define our place and sense of belonging in the world. You will study a range of texts, including Millions and Son of Rambow, that explore this theme in more detail.

Year 9 English - Myths and LegendsYou will have the chance to transport yourself back in time to Ancient Greece to hear the tales of Heroes and Monsters like Theseus and the Minotaur, Perseus and the Gorgon, and Deadalus and Icarus. Then onto Viking territory to hear of Odin and Thor, and Beowulf's fight with the creature Grendel. You can then move onto Briton and learn of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table...

Year 9 English - Roses and DaggersPassion, romance, jealousy, love, obsession, and beauty... A range of texts that look at relationships - the good, the bad, and the ugly. You will study visual texts by innovative director Baz Luhrmann, analyse song lyrics by Nick Cave, and read a variety of texts revloving around the theme of star crossed lovers.

Year 9 English - Poetry AnthologyYou will look at a variety of poetical forms and compose your own creative poetry anthology. Your anthology may include Haiku, Tanka, Renga, Limerick, Sonnet, and more. You will also begin to analyse a collection of famous poems or song lyrics and develop your essay writing skills.
