Year 10 English - The Melting Pot
The Year 10 The Melting Pot Unit explores a range of texts that deal with the issue of having roots in one culture, but having to adapt to the traditions and social norms of another. Encyclopedia of the Nations states that New Zealand's population is made up of approximately, "74.5% New Zealand European; 9.7% Maori; 4.6% Other European; 3.8% Pacific Islander; and 7.4% Asian and other". This suggests that at one time or another nearly all New Zealanders or their ancestors have had to cope with mixing cultures and the problems and issues that can arise.
The texts that you will study may include Poems from Different Cultures, Song Lyrics, and Short Stories from authors of mixed ethnicity or who have moved countries; novels and plays such as Refugee Boy; and films such as Bend It Like Beckham, Bride and Prejudice, or No. 2.
Added to this you will produce creative pieces such as a collage, poetry, and song lyrics researching and exploring your own ancestry, culture, traditions and beliefs.
Poems from Different CulturesExplore a range of poems that address issues such as racism, slavery, home-sickness, having to learn a new language, styles of dress, and the aftermath of war.
This powerful and varied collection of poems will really make you think about your own beliefs, traditions, culture and roots. |
